Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance
No medical exam, no health questions, cannot be denied. The fallback option when other coverage isn't available.
Guaranteed-issue (GI) policies skip underwriting entirely — if you're within the carrier's age range and you can pay the premium, you're approved. You trade higher premiums and a 2-3 year graded period for the ability to get coverage when nothing else will accept you.
How the graded period works
In years 1 and 2, if you die from natural causes, the policy returns your premiums plus interest (typically 7–10%) instead of paying the full death benefit. Accidental death is covered in full from day one. Year 3 onward, the full death benefit applies.
Who it's for
- People declined for level or graded coverage due to health.
- Applicants with serious chronic conditions (heart, lung, cancer history, ESRD, etc.).
- Anyone who wants the simplest, fastest acceptance with no health questions.
Trade-offs
- 40–55% more expensive per dollar of coverage than level plans.
- Coverage caps are typically lower ($25K–$30K).
- 2–3 year graded period before full death benefit applies.
Most applicants do better starting with final expense (level) coverage and only falling back to GI if denied. Our calculator surfaces the best plan type available for your profile automatically.
